Isokern garden fireplaces are outdoor fireplaces built from natural volcanic pumice blocks, in three sizes: small (500), medium (950) and large (1200). Why volcanic pumice

Schiedel describes natural volcanic pumice as giving these outdoor fireplaces all the insulation they need to be a safe and spectacular focal point, and as a way to extend the use of an outdoor space into the colder autumn and winter months. The medium model was featured on ITV's Love Your Garden with Alan Titchmarsh.

Choosing a size

Start with the space you have. The small model has the smallest footprint, at 440mm deep and 685mm wide. The medium and large models share a depth of 640mm and a height of 2250mm, widening from 1090mm to 1330mm. Schiedel notes that the relatively small footprint means a garden fireplace can stand against a wall even in a small garden or yard.

Build options

• Each model can be built freestanding, raised, or against a wall.
• The fireplaces are fully load-bearing but need a sturdy base: Schiedel gives the weight as about 460kg for the small model and about 1,100kg for the large model.
• The chimney can be built taller with additional chimney blocks, available with the other garden fireplace accessories.
• A Wave top rain cap is an optional extra on all models.
• Schiedel describes the kits as straightforward for any competent, handy person to assemble by following the installation instructions.
